A proud Nlaka'pamux community and member of the Scw'exmx Tribal Council, one of the five Nicola Valley bands of the Scw'exmx, the People of the Creeks
Sx̣íx̣nx: Shackan Indian Band, also known as Shackan First Nation or 14 Mile, has the Thompson-language name Sx̣íx̣nx, written sxéxn̓x by the tribal council. The English name comes from Scw'ex, the name of the Nicola River, meaning creek. No treaty has been found for Shackan; the Province of British Columbia is building relations with the Nicola group outside the B.C. treaty process.
Population: Our community has 136 registered members, according to a 2021 release, and our people continue to speak and carry forward Nłeʔkepmxcín.
Location: Our three reserves, totalling 3,873.70 hectares, lie approximately 20 km east of Spences Bridge and 40 km west of Merritt on Highway 8. Our band office is in Merritt.
Culture: We are guided by Respect for Self & Others, Positive Sharing, Positive Helping, Positive Learning, Positive Teaching, Healthy Lifestyle and Self-Sufficiency. Our economy includes forestry, mining, a greenhouse on reserve that grows traditional plants, and a clean-energy revenue-sharing agreement for the Kwoiek Creek Hydro Project. In 2019 we became the smallest band in Canada to receive a Financial Management System Certificate.
